NYU Prof. Scott Galloway and ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt are Slut Shaming the Adult Industry

On the 24th of November, Eric Schmidt, Google’s former CEO, appeared on The Prof G Show, to discuss the future of AI and his new book, Genesis, with NYU Professor Scott Galloway. At 4:49 minutes into the show, Scott asks Eric “Do you think AI girlfriends could make loneliness worse and lead to bigger social problems like extremism and misogyny?” This question is in light of the recent lawsuit against Character.ai and Google, filed by Megan Garcia, after her son committed suicide. Google purchased Character.AI from ex-Googlers and now owns part of it. Scott said that the minds of young men are not fully formed and are susceptible to being seduced by a perfect AI girlfriend. He said that, the question of “are you mature enough to handle it?” is unresolved.

Well, I’m here to tell you, Eric, and Scott, that they’re wrong and are just slut shamming the adult industry. The question of how mature a user needs to be to use an AI girlfriend product has been resolved. It is 18 years of age. The issue they’re discussing is about character.ai, which is a role playing game that’s available to children. This article will discuss the history of VirtualGF products, how it differs from role playing platforms like Character.ai, and why their statements were actually slut shaming.

Virtual Girlfriends Are An Adult Product And Has Always Been An Adult Product

The origins of virtual girlfriend chatbots comes from strip clubs. There, there’d be men who pay for strippers to sit down with them and talk with them. These clients would not ask for dances but only wanted to talk. They’re known as “chatters” among strippers.

With the advent of the Internet, it opened the world of chat platforms, where people can have online girlfriend experiences with webcam models and professional fetish chatters. Example sites are FremdGehen69, AmateurFans, and ExtremeSite. ExtremeSite is a place dedicated to BDSM sex chats. These platforms catered to users who were very lonely or who have very extreme fetishes, that only professionals can satisfy. All these platforms are 18+ and require a credit card. Children are definitely not welcomes on these platforms.

Once LLM technology entered the world, the companies that owns these chat platforms created AI girlfriend apps. These apps allow users to create their own ideal AI girlfriends. Users can choose her appearance and personality. Users can have sex chats with them, ask for nudes, and even have voice calls. Given that 7% of all ChatGPT conversations were about sex, it was a natural move. Examples of sites in this category are VirtualGF, DreamBabe, and CandyAI.

One thing that all these AI Girlfriend apps have in common are that they’re 18+. They’re created by the adult industry and have clear safeguards against children using them. What’s more, there’s plenty of engineered safeguards to prevent people from creating unethical AI girlfriends. Examples of this would be an AI girlfriend that’s not 18+ or an AI girlfriend that’s an animal. Within the adult industry, there’s tons of safeguards against allowing access for children as well as protecting children. It’s one of the first rules of the adult industry and there’s tons of laws for this.

Character.AI Targets Children

Google’s Character.ai, which caused a suicide this summer, is not a virtual girlfriend app. It wasn’t made by the adult industry and there were no 18+ filters. It’s actually a role playing game where people can create characters and role-play with them. The terms of service says that it is for ages 13 and above. Other examples are Replika or MyAnima.ai.

The death of the 14 year old boy would have never happened on an actual virtual girlfriend product from the adult industry, since he was under the age of 18 and would be unable to use the product. It happened because he created a virtual girlfriend character, in a role playing game. These role playing apps definitely need more safeguards in place, if they want to keep it open to children. 13 years olds are children still.

Eric and Scott were just Slut Shaming

Eric and Scott were saying that AI girlfriends are dangerous for young men and they were thinking about a 14 year old who committed suicide. They didn’t know the app he was using wasn’t an ai girlfriend app but a role playing app. Actual AI girlfriend apps that you can have sex chats with are 18+.

This is total hypocrisy on Eric’s part, since he knows Google owns Character.ai and that it is 13+. What Eric should do is call up Character.ai and tell them to raise the age limits, if he is so worried about young men. If you’re the ex-CEO of Google, you have the power to do this. He would not do that, since it would limit the user base of Character.ai.

His comments about how AI girlfriends are dangerous for young men is just purely slut shaming. It connotes that users of AI girlfriend apps are sexual deviants and are mentally unsound. There’s actually cases of people who lost weight, improved their careers, and improved their lives after developing an AI romance. They found that the perfect love from an AI was what they needed to take their lives to the next level. Also, all these people are legal adults, since an AI girlfriend is an adult product.

Also, that crazy comment that AI girlfriend users would become radicalised into terrorism or misogamy is a slippery slope. I can tell you, after testing 30+ AI girlfriend products and talking to the developers, that people here aren’t making Al Qaeda AI girlfriends or red-pill AI girlfriends. They’re asking for stuff like blowjobs. This is why Scott and Eric’s comments were nothing but slut shaming.

Conclusion

The discussion Scott and Eric had about virtual girlfriends were totally false and it is clear that they’ve never used a virtual girlfriend product. They were referring to role playing platforms like c.ai, which are for children. Yes, I agree, that AI role playing games needs more safeguards, since children are using them. What I disliked was that they somehow connected actual virtual girlfriend apps to this, and somehow said it’ll radicalise people into jihadism or misogamy. That’s crazy. What people would do on platforms like that is… come. Yeah, that’s it. They’re masturbating. That’s what adults use these apps for. It isn’t something crazy. America needs to be more accepting of sex. That’s the whole reason why the sex industry exists in America, because people are just so sex negative and don’t get laid.
